Bringing the mountains to life with Rea Oberoi
Meet Rea Oberoi, a storyteller, author, and entrepreneur whose life experiences in the awe-inspiring Himalayas culminated in the beautiful story of “Kanchenjunga Whispers.” Being a mountain lover and a spiritual person, Rea Oberoi draws her inspiration from the rich cultures and traditions that thrive in the Himalayas. Growing up in heritage hotels in the region, with her father as a strong influence, the author found inspiration and motivation during the lockdown in Darjeeling, which led to the creation of this enchanting book. Pooja Shetty from GoCreator had a chance to catch up with her and converse about her book, life, and upcoming plans. Here are some excerpts from the conversation.
- Please tell us a little about yourself and what inspired you to become a storyteller/ author.
I am a mountain lover, a seeker and always curious to know in depth about various cultures, traditions and its history. Mythology, history and mysticism has been a part of my life growing up in Heritage hotels in the Himalayas. My father has been a big influence in my life teaching me new aspects in various fields. During the covid lockdown I was in Darjeeling with my sister away from family when I got inspired to write Kanchenjunga Whispers. Storytelling has been a medium to preserve one’s culture and traditions so that it’s not lost in time. My book is a dedication to my mortal masters, immortal mountains and my Creator who have inspired me to put pen on paper. It is my way of keeping their memory alive.
- “Kanchenjunga Whispers” is an intriguing title for a book. What is the significance behind the name, and how does it contribute to your story?
I wanted the readers to feel that the snow clad mountains are speaking to them directly, telling its story. This is why I chose the name ‘Kanchenjunga whispers.’
- How did you approach the character development of your book? Did real-life characters inspire you?
Yes, my book is inspired by true events and real people who are part of the Elgin family. It is my way of preserving their knowledge passed down to me for the future generations and the people of the Himalayas.
- Are you exploring particular issues or topics through the narrative?
My book explores mysticism, mythology, history, family connections, sisterhood, Friendship, nature and reverence for the Kanchenjunga. I wish to show people another world that exists within our modern landscape. I like to give a glimpse of my hometown where the ( Sansar) physical world meets ( Moksha) the journey of the soul.
- Your book seems deeply rooted in the location’s culture, spirituality, and mystique. How much did your background influence the story and characters?
The beauty and divinity of the Himalayas inspired me to write this book. Darjeeling is a special town which has much more to offer than its tea. I want to be the one to highlight its unique culture and diversity.
- Did personal experiences or real-life people inspire you, or did you research extensively for various aspects of the book?
It is inspired by true events and personal experiences that are very close to my heart. I did a-lot of research as well and dug deep into more detail about things passed down to me by the Elgin family. Only blank pages can hold my Himalayan soul.
- Did you face any challenges while writing “Kanchenjunga Whispers,” and how did you overcome them?
My biggest challenge was to do justice to the beauty of the Himalayas while connecting my personal experience with it. I want the readers to feel like they are with me in the mountains as I give them a glimpse of my family and my Himalayan home.
- What were the most rewarding aspects of bringing Kanchenjunga Whispers to life?
Kanchenjunga whispers are written in the memory of all my loved ones that I have lost who have shaped my life as carpenters carve their woodwork. I unfortunately lost my father this year and I hope his memory will be alive through my pages. This is the most satisfying and biggest reward for me.
- What emotional or intellectual impact do you hope to make on your readers?
I want readers to feel and experience my world and dive into the divinity of the Himalayas of Darjeeling and Sikkim. A hidden land that has a high vibration like no other.
- Have you had any reactions, responses, or critiques from readers that have been noteworthy or memorable?
I have got positive responses so far and have been blessed with people encouraging my work. My style of writing is a love letter to the Himalayas which is being appreciated by readers.
- What advice do you have for aspiring authors, especially those who may be working on their first novel?
An advice would be: You must believe in what you are writing and continue the flow. if you have a connection with your work and it means something to you, then nothing can stop you from achieving your goal.
Consistency is the key for writers.
- Are there lessons you learned while writing and publishing that you’d like to share?
The lesson I learned is to never give up trying and be true to yours. Keep the pace steady and keep the stories gripping.
- What are your future plans? Are there new stories or genres you’re eager to explore?
I have planned a sequel to Kanchenjunga Whispers which may be on the shelves soon.
