During the pandemic, OTT platforms like Netflix tried to meet an increased viewer demand by sharing more content from global cinema. During this time, our founder, Geeta Vij, noticed a recurring pattern where the same filmmakers and content creators were featured, limiting diverse voices and stories and stagnating the industry. This observation led Geeta to further research the independent film industry, discovering that despite its market value of $8.4 billion(USD), only 27% of independent films are sold.
As she delved further into the subject, she realized the core issue was the disconnect between the buyers and the sellers. Film festivals like Cannes traditionally serve as the main venues for these connections, but they are often financially inaccessible for many filmmakers. Even for those who manage to attend, there’s no guarantee of opportunities to showcase their work and secure deals. Furthermore, many independent filmmakers lack the business skills to effectively navigate the complex film market, which hinders their ability to monetize their creative efforts.
This information triggered a thought in our founder’s head, and she decided to do something to democratize the global film industry. She and a fellow Nasdaq colleague decided to use their experience and financial industry principles to the film industry, simplify various processes, and enhance transparency. The rest, as they say, is history; their idea led to the creation of GoCreator, an online platform/marketplace accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the world. GoCreator aims to bridge the gap between filmmakers and buyers or distributors, providing an equitable opportunity for filmmakers to get discovered and secure representation, ultimately fostering a more inclusive and profitable independent film industry.
